This cholesterol calculator classifies the numbers you enter into standard categories. It does not diagnose conditions or recommend treatment.

  • Inputs:Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (mg/dL).
  • Outputs:One category label for each value using NCEP ranges.
  • Category labels:Total cholesterol: Desirable, Borderline high, High. LDL cholesterol: Optimal, Near optimal, Borderline high, High, Very high. HDL cholesterol: Low, Normal, Protective. Triglycerides: Normal, Borderline high, High, Very high.
  • Units:mg/dL (common in the United States). If your lab reports mmol/L, convert to mg/dL before using this tool.

Total cholesterol

  • Desirable:< 200 mg/dL
  • Borderline high:200 to 239 mg/dL
  • High:≥ 240 mg/dL

LDL cholesterol

  • Optimal:< 100 mg/dL
  • Near optimal:100 to 129 mg/dL
  • Borderline high:130 to 159 mg/dL
  • High:160 to 189 mg/dL
  • Very high:≥ 190 mg/dL

HDL cholesterol

  • Low:< 40 mg/dL
  • Normal:40 to 59 mg/dL
  • Protective:≥ 60 mg/dL

Triglycerides

  • Normal:< 150 mg/dL
  • Borderline high:150 to 199 mg/dL
  • High:200 to 499 mg/dL
  • Very high:≥ 500 mg/dL
